YouTube is changing the way it counts public views across its video platform, bringing videos of all formats under a common view-counting standard.

Starting August 24, 2026, YouTube will count a public view from the moment a video begins playing, starting with its very first frame. The updated methodology will apply globally across YouTube’s different video formats.

The move follows YouTube’s earlier update to the way views are counted for Shorts and is intended to create greater consistency in how video exposure is measured across the platform.

A unified view-counting system

Historically, YouTube has used different systems to count views across various video formats. According to the company, creators have asked for greater consistency and a clearer understanding of how much exposure their content receives.

With the new methodology, a view will be registered as soon as playback begins, allowing public view counts across formats to follow the same standard.

YouTube expects creators to see their publicly displayed view counts increase at a faster rate following the change.

However, the company is retaining its existing engagement-focused measurement within YouTube Analytics.

Engaged views will remain available

Creators will continue to have access to the original view metric, now referred to as “Engaged views,” through YouTube Analytics’ Advanced Mode.

This metric is designed to provide insight into how many viewers actually chose to continue watching a video, offering creators a more meaningful measure of audience engagement alongside the new public view count.

No change to creator monetization

YouTube said the change will not affect creator earnings or eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

Creator earnings will continue to be calculated using Engaged Shorts views and Engaged Watch Hours, which remain available through YouTube Analytics’ Advanced Mode.

YouTube also said there will be no change to the requirements for entering the YPP. As part of the terminology update, the existing “valid public Shorts views” and “valid public watch hours” terminology will now be referred to as “qualified Shorts views” and “qualified watch hours.”

What creators should expect

The updated public view metric will begin appearing across YouTube from August 24. As a result, creators may notice their overall view counts growing more quickly than under the previous methodology.

For brands, agencies and creators, the change could also make public view counts easier to compare across different YouTube formats, providing a more consistent picture of content reach and overall exposure.

YouTube said the broader objective is to give creators a clearer understanding of their scale and make it easier for them to communicate their audience reach to brand partners and sponsors.
